Swans I Wont Do It Again

I love raising budgies; they are but the cutest and most adorable birds out there.

budgies-and-other-pets

Budgies are groovy friends to have. A quick browse on Google images reveals many images of their amusing antics. It's no wonder that they are so popular to take as a pet. Most people start with one, just quickly start to wonder. . . should I get a second 1? This commodity will give you advice and useful tips, and what to practice next.

A 2nd Budgie?

Most birdlovers start out with just the i budgie. Yous spent a lot of time thinking about it, gaining information, bought a cage and fun toys and got the best birdfood y'all could find. Then you lot're off to the animate being shop, put downwards some greenbacks and walk domicile proud with your very get-go budgie.

But it'due south not long before you beginning to wonder... should I get a second budgie? Maybe yous've noticed Tweety is a little lonely, or someone else points out that budgies really are group animals and should have a buddy. Perhaps yous're just so hooked on your tiny friend that yous just desire to have more than of the aforementioned thing. All are good reasons to get another, or even third or 4th, budgie. So the doubts rear their head: what if they don't get forth?

Budgies have a personality of their own, as any parakeet owner will surely tell yous. Sometimes, equally information technology is with humans, those personalities collide. So, before yous decide to get a 2d budgie, make sure you are willing and able to keep a 2nd, dissever cage. This is not only a good back-up plan in example your budgies can't stand each other. If 1 (or heaven forestall: more than one) budgie gets sick, you need to be able to place it in quarantaine, so the other birds don't get contaminated.

Generally speaking though, budgies are very genial and volition quickly befriend another parakeet.

Budgie Jealousy

Initially, your first budgie volition go on itself at a distance towards the newcomer. Don't be surprised if, after you spent all that time building a skilful relationship with your budgie, he even becomes a little angry at you. Some birds who were previously attached to their owners suddenly bite or refuse to perch on a finger. This is temporary. Imagine your budgie to be a 3 year-onetime, both in wits and personality. He's actually actually jealous! He had a palace for himself, all that attention and food, the toys, ... Everything revolved around him. At present he sees there's some other one similar him. An invader! They are that smart. So how do y'all deal with a jealous little budgie?

Introducing a New Budgie

1. Turn the Threat Into Marvel

First, don't treat him any differently. Requite him just as much attention as before. Keep the newcomer separated, only make sure the cages are inside hearing altitude of each other. This way, neither bird feels threatened by the other, and they are able to safely get used to the other'south presence. Suspicion turns into curiosity.

2. Move the Cages Together

Subsequently a day, movement the two cages close together. Place them next to each other. The birds will climb their muzzle trying to go to the other one. They want to examine the other bird. Do not let them out, don't put them in one muzzle! They'll withal fight!

3. Let Your Old Pet Out

After two-iii days, you can let the tame budgie out. It'll fly to the new bird, state on summit of the cage and investigate. If information technology tin can accomplish a toy or food, it volition play with it or consume it. He's trying to prepare the pecking order! "All this is mine now, I'm the boss."

Let this to happen. Don't feel pity, in the long run it's the best for both birds. Just keep an eye out that neither bird hurts the other. If possible, you can put a vegetable or a piece of fruit between the bars of the cage, so both birds tin easily consume from it. Eating together like this volition create the first bond and further assistance constitute the pecking order.

four. Endeavor One Cage During the Twenty-four hours

Somewhen, when things seem to go well, you tin can allow the 2 birds to spend the twenty-four hour period in ane main cage. The entire previous process should take at least ane week. Don't let them sleep together yet.

Do continue an eye out the first few days for fights. They'll still quarrel, which is normal, but if feathers start to fly or they scroll squeaking through the cage holding on to each other, it's time to take action. Extend the separation time and re-evaluate.

5. Arrange a Sleepover

Finally, if there are no further problems (give information technology at least iii days), you lot can try allowing them to spend the night in one cage. Over again, if problems arise, take a step back and re-evaluate.

I Think Nosotros Should Redecorate...

An extra tip when putting two budgies together. On the day you put the two budgies in one cage, clean, reorganize the main cage and put in some toys from the new bird. This will fool the budgies into thinking they're both being put in a new muzzle and forbid the first bird from feeling the need to defend its own territory.

Finally...

If all these steps are followed and y'all tin can let them sleep together in one muzzle without bug, congratulations: yous've successfully extended your bird family!

Give them plenty time, and very soon, they'll exist the very best of friends. They'll feed each other, launder each other, and so on. Somewhen, you lot'll notice them doing everything together!

@Bellinda: Although I tin't tell for sure without observing, it sounds like they have already bonded. Nibbling at her beak is a sign of affection. If she lets him, it means she feels affectionnate towards him too. You lot say he attacks her, does he lunge at her in one case or really endeavour to injure her? The lunge could exist perfectly innocent. A second feeder is definitely recommended in this example, as y'all need -at least- every bit many feeders as there are birds. Some people volition recommend getting one extra, just I don't remember that'due south necessary with just two budgies. He may be feeding her though, wait closely: their beaks would be interlocked, as if they're making out, and he'll seem to exist throwing up.

Either mode, get a second feeder. Simply information technology doesn't audio like he hates her. ;-)

You say you can't afford a second cage. I do recommend, if yous are able to, to buy a small travel muzzle. These tin can be found for around fifteen$. Merely in case. Expert luck with your birds!!

Hey, sorry for the tardily answer. Ane of two things will have happened. Either they learned to go along and are now friends, or you lot had to give 1 of them abroad because they kept fighting. Information technology depends on the gender, actually. Two girls and one male will cause a fight (girls can get jealous). Two males and i daughter will commonly work out, just since b udgies have personalities and are all unique, it's impossible to predict up forepart. From what y'all describe, I reckon he was just a little anxious every bit a newcomer in an already established grouping, and thus he seperated himself as a precaution. More likely though, he'south now a part of the group, though if there is a girl in at that place, I expect there to be a couple by now.

Elysianphoenix (writer) from Belgium on Jan 23, 2014:

Odd as information technology may sound, that's actually really good! Imagine they didn't go forth and would fight all the time? Your budgies need a bird friend, and now they take one! This makes them And so much happier than a human ever could! But don't let that discourage yous. If yous requite them both beloved and attention, y'all'll only take doubled the love you receive from them!!

Elysianphoenix (author) from Belgium on January 23, 2014:
